The city of Aarhus, Denmark's second largest city, will have a wooden parking lot. The car park is part of the Sydhavnskvarteret [the southern part of the port city] urban revitalization and regeneration project and could become the largest timber-framed building in Denmark.
The building is designed by 2 architectural studios, Open Platform and JAJA Architects, who won a competition to build Denmark's first timber-framed parking garage. The building fits in with the country's vision to become carbon neutral by 2050.
For the realization of the building with a total surface of 19,300m², laminated solid wood panels will be used - both CLT - Cross Laminated Timber as well as LVL- Laminated Veneer Lumberwith a green facade.
In addition to 700 parking spaces spread over 6 floors, the building will include 2,000m² of public spaces such as a gym, gallery, café and events hall.
Conventional and alternative transportation facilities will be located on the ground floor of the building and will include recharging stations, cargo bike rental, carpooling stations and dedicated parking spaces for car-sharing
Located near the city center, the project is designed to encourage locals to park their cars and continue their journey on foot, by bike or scooter.
