Staining and protecting wood - finishing, as a generic term - are operations that can either increase or decrease the quality of a wood product. The finish is what you see immediately on a piece of furniture and you can feel it as soon as you put your hands on it. Despite this, the subject is sometimes treated superficially, with the assumption that if the wood is good quality and the design is great, that's enough. But it is not. Treated superficially, without paying attention to the choice of products and their application, the finish takes its revenge, which is immediately apparent in the final appearance of the product. That's why, in addition to the technical articles already in the magazine's pages, we've started a video series dedicated to finishing. We will cover a variety of topics, and your suggestions can help us to uncover other topics of interest to you. We have partnered with Lomilux Cluj, which provided us with the materials, technical and logistical support for such a project.
Finishing Gurus - Wood Finishing Video Series
In the video series we will explain how to achieve the right finish, show application methods, see and test products, and discuss topics of interest, from the grain used in sanding wood to achieving special effects. The videos will be short, condensed in terms of information and we will focus on a single theme to make it easy to follow. Many of them will be based on questions we receive from you in the magazine articles. Often, when answering a question, I thought how nice it would be to be able to exemplify. Now, as the movies come out, this will become possible. We aim to present useful material for industry professionals as well as finishing techniques for beginners and hobbyists. We want everyone to find in this cycle the subject they are interested in. We want it to be a useful resource for those who need information on finishing.
Wood staining is a topic that offers us countless subjects
One of the topics is wood coloring. It is hard to tell how, using the same color, the same type of wood, but different baths in terms of application, consistency or formulation, different effects and different quality of colored wood can be obtained. But a video presentation makes this task infinitely easier.
Water-based stain remover for floor staining
In the video below you will see how to apply a floor polish. Yes, for parquet you need a specially made parquet stain to get a very good result. What is the main problem with staining parquet? The very large area that needs to be stained evenly. It is impossible to find a way (unless we are talking about factory-colored parquet) to apply the stain to the entire surface simultaneously. The parquet layer has to apply with a trowel or brush to smaller areas, and in the area where they meet, the likelihood of overlapping layers is very high. Using an ordinary grout will result in a darker surface in those areas. A flooring stain will absorb and dry more slowly, giving the floor finisher time to even out the surface. This is what you'll see in the video.
There are special baths for different types of wood, for wood that absorbs unevenly (plop) or for wood with large pores (frasin), as well as wood stains for interior and exterior use, water-based or solvent-based stains that bring out the natural wood pattern or, on the contrary, fade it to a very uniform color. Using the right stain will give a better result with much less effort. We would like to show you these stains, the differences between them and recommendations for use.
Lomilux Cluj, our partner in this endeavor
Such a project needs diverse and quality materials and a suitable framework for their application. These were provided by Lomilux Cluj, our partner in this endeavor. Lomilux, distributor of ICA wood finishing products, is a household name, having been in the market for professional wood varnishes and paints for almost 20 years. In its wide range of products, both for industrial use and for craftsmen or hobbyists, we were able to find all the products needed for practical presentations. We also benefited from the practical experience of the company's specialists who helped us in many of the presentations.
We hope that this new project will pique your interest and that you will find the information you need. Don't forget to let us know what techniques or products you would like to see, we are counting on you :). You can write to us here or any other article on youtube, Facebook or wherever you find us.
