Dynamic Living - The micro-home revolution with moving magnetic walls

Häfele receives prestigious 'Best of the Best' award at Interzum Award 2025 for innovative project that transforms 18 square meters into a 36 square meter sensation

In the context of accelerated urbanization and the continuing decline in available living space, companies in the furniture industry are looking for innovative solutions to maximize functionality in small spaces. Häfele SE & Co KG, the German leader in hardware technology and access control systems, has provided a spectacular answer with its revolutionary design Dynamic Living, which was awarded the highest recognition at the Interzum Award 2025.

The concept that changes the paradigm of micro-housing

Dynamic Living is a holistic concept for space utilization that makes living areas flexible and efficient in use. Smart furniture, modular wall elements and integrated technology allow the space to adapt to changing needs - from working to relaxing. The goal is to reduce space consumption while maximizing quality of life, functionality and design options.

The experimental apartment, filmed by our team at Interzum 2025 (video below), shows how, with the help of magnetic sliding technology, smart fittings and careful planning, 18 square meters of built-up space can be flexibly expanded to 36 usable square meters. This technical achievement is not just an engineering exercise, but a practical solution to the real problems of modern living.

Magnetic technology - the heart of innovation

The centerpiece of the Dynamic Living concept is the revolutionary Magnetic Sliding Technology, which allows the fluid movement of 500 kg walls with minimal effort. The system uses magnetic fields to allow walls to move almost friction-free, while still being able to support considerable weights. The major advantage is that, being based on permanent magnets, the system requires no external power supply and requires minimal maintenance over the lifetime of the product.

This technology makes it possible to instantly transform spaces: from a fully functional kitchen to a spacious living room, from a cozy bedroom to a productive office - all with a simple move of the walls.

Integrated solutions for every function

The demonstration apartment integrates the full range of Häfele solutions, from foldable furniture to advanced electronics. The 4-person foldable table, wall-integrated bed and fully concealed desk are just some of the elements that demonstrate how technology can maximize utility in a minimal space.

Häfele Lighting lighting systems create the right atmosphere for every function in the room, from functional light for cooking to a relaxing ambience for relaxing.

Strategic partnership for exceptional results

Häfele collaborated with key industry partners in the development of the project: EGGER for wood materials, Knauf for building solutions, Grohe for sanitary systems and Kaldewei for bathroom elements. This collaborative approach demonstrates that the future of urban living is built through strategic partnerships between industry leaders.

Best of the Best Award - recognizing excellence

At the 13th Interzum Awards held on May 19, 2025 in Cologne, Häfele convinced with the "Dynamic Living" living module, which with its sliding walls, modular furniture and integrated lighting solutions allows flexible use of space in the smallest area. Out of 146 entries from 23 countries, only 12 projects received the supreme "Best of the Best" award.

Sustainability through efficiency

Dynamic Living is the impetus for flexible and sustainable solutions - modular, resource-saving. The concept responds directly to the challenges of sustainability: every square meter that doesn't need to be built saves materials, water and energy, and every square meter that doesn't need to be built doesn't need to be cooled or heated, saving energy over the lifetime of the building.

Häfele CEO Gregor Riekena explained the company's philosophy: "At this year's Interzum, we are taking the next logical step with our guiding principle: for the first time, we are presenting a series of realized projects, concretely demonstrating that for us, this is about more than just product innovations."

Impact on the furniture industry

The Dynamic Living project is not just a technology demonstration, but a catalyst for the whole industry. Students, digital nomads or single people, to give just a few examples, need living concepts that can be very easily adapted to their individual needs.

From the kitchen to the living room, from the bedroom to the office - everything is transformed by simply moving the walls, offering a new perspective on space efficiency and integrated functionality.

The future of urban living

With Dynamic Living, Häfele is not only responding to current trends in the real estate market, but is defining the future standards for efficient urban living. The project was first presented at BAU Munich in January 2025 and then exhibited at Interzum 2025, demonstrating the maturity and commercial applicability of the concept.

This distinction at the Interzum Award 2025 confirms that Dynamic Living is not just an isolated technical innovation, but represents a paradigm shift in the understanding and use of living spaces. For the furniture and interior design industry, this concept opens up new horizons of development and business opportunities in the fast-growing segment of urban micro-homes.

Dynamic Living's success demonstrates that the future of living is not about available floor space, but about design intelligence and the ability to adapt to the changing needs of modern urban dwellers.
