{"id":15916,"date":"2018-02-18T09:48:47","date_gmt":"2018-02-18T07:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/?p=15916"},"modified":"2018-07-12T09:47:53","modified_gmt":"2018-07-12T06:47:53","slug":"pocket-hole-type-joints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/en\/2018\/02\/18\/imbinari-de-tipul-pocket-hole\/","title":{"rendered":"Pocket hole joints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, there are two types of people who work with wood: those who enjoy the actual process of creation (here I am referring to the satisfaction of making something <a href=\"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/en\/2017\/09\/05\/the-dovetailing-specific-to-old-wooden-houses-and-churches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swallowtail joints<\/a>when straightening a wooden plank using <a href=\"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/en\/2017\/08\/21\/rendele\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manual rinser<\/a>) and those who like to see their project completed. I try to strike a balance between the two, I use one for smaller projects or when time is not my friend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A year ago, my first carpentry project was made with joints like <strong><em>pocket hole<\/em><\/strong>. Loosely translated it would be \"pocket hole\".  Because I don't know of any synonym for this type of splice, and because its free translation simply doesn't lead us anywhere near what it represents, we'll simply call it <em>pocket hole<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15974\" src=\"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"1599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-19.jpg 900w, https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-19-600x1066.jpg 600w, https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-19-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-19-768x1364.jpg 768w, https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-19-576x1024.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1986, Craig Sommerfeld was in the process of building his house and needed to find a quick way to attach frames to the kitchen cabinet enclosures. Although a toolmaker and carpenter by trade, Craig had a problem. Unwilling to attach the frames to the carcase frames with blind headed nails and then cover with putty, he designed and built the \"pocket hole\" template. This template allowed him to attach the frames inside the housings where the joint could be hidden.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How does it work?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pocket hole joint involves drilling a hole at a 15-degree angle in the material to be machined and then attaching it to the second material with screws. The top of the drill is narrow to guide the screw and the bottom is wider to make the 'pocket hole'. Mix sawdust with wood glue and use a spackle to even out the gap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercially available stoppers in sizes between 12-38 mm. They come in a wide variety of shades. Adhesive is applied to the stopper, and after it has been fixed in the hollow, the excess can be removed with a level-cutting saw.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to the previous version, but instead of plugs, dowels are used.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15971\" src=\"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-17.jpg 810w, https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-17-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-17-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/download-17-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question certainly arises \"<strong>how strong is such a joint?<\/strong>\".<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, Matthias Wandel, a well-known online carpenter, carried out a series of strength tests on a joint of the type <em>pocket hole<\/em>. This type of joint can be used from a simple picture frame to a wardrobe;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time saved;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very small learning curve.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joints are not as strong as the classic ones;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filling gaps so they are not visible;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less satisfaction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you're passionate about the DIY concept and have a minimum of tools (self-tapping screwdriver, clamps and a pocket hole device) with joints like <em>pocket hole<\/em>\u00a0you can realize a multitude of <a href=\"https:\/\/revistadinlemn.ro\/en\/2018\/04\/07\/diy-toilet-table-project-for-gift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">projects<\/a>.
