Wood-Mizer introduces the MP180 high quality multi-blade planer

The compact and cost-effective MP180 planer with 3-in-1 functionality saves operational costs and time in the production of furniture lumber and planks and tongue and groove joint profiles.

The MP180 multi-blade planer developed by Wood-Mizer has a horizontal knife for planing and thickness straightening and a side knife added to the bottom table for profiling. As one of the smallest machines in Wood-Mizer's range of planer/profilers, the MP180 produces finished rectangular planks and profiles in just two passes, compared to the six or eight passes required on a standard planer.

Processing begins by using the top table to make two perfectly flat adjacent sides and creating precise right angles at each. Then the last two sides are processed by the bottom table, straightening to thickness and bringing the plank to final dimensions.

"You can remove any warping from dry lumber using the MP180 machine to get a perfectly straight product," says Mr Keith Threadgall, a wood processor in Scotland. "Once the surface is flat, you can run it underneath through the thickness straightening knife, since the opposite surface will be perfectly flat - parallel to the first surface."

By using the horizontal knife for planing/thicknessing and the vertical side knife for profiling, the machine MP180 operates with a functionality 3-in-1more specifically shaving, straightening to thickness and side profiling - without having to reconfigure the machine.

Several features make the MP180 multi-blade planer unique:

  • The straightening width at thickness is 410 mm - superior to most competitors on the market.
  • The height of the straightening to thickness is 260 mm.
  • The additional side axle can profile up to 100 mm high.
  • The cast iron bed is solid and reduces machine vibration while increasing reliability.
  • The easy-to-adjust top knife guard improves operating safety.
  • The horizontal knife is supplied with 2 standard blades. For a smoother finish, an optional 4-blade knife is available.
  • The forward speed is constant at 6m/min as standard. For hardwood processing, an optional feed speed variable between 2-12 m/min is available.
  • The aluminium side rails tilt up to 45 degrees.

"Even when you prepare a straight 4" by 4" beam, you don't always want to make it perfectly square," continues Mr. Keith Threadgall. "With the guides you can easily add a 45-degree bevel to it to make sure it's not sharp and improve its aesthetics. This adds value to the finished wood."

The benefit is that you can profile and thickness the plank at the same time. The spare spindle for the vertical side knife allows you to easily change profiling knives, and in just two passes produce tongue and groove joints.

The clever design of the MP180 consists of two separate drive motors, one for the top knife block and the other for the side shafts. These two motors can be switched on individually as required - saving on additional electricity costs during operation.

"This goes hand in hand with Wood-Mizer's mindset of using narrow-band, thin-cut saws to save steel, energy and generate as little wood waste as possible. Not running all motors at the same time also reduces maintenance costs, in terms of blades, belts and bearings," concludes Radoslaw Adamkiewicz, Wood-Mizer Product Manager.

This unique combination of functionality and quality at an affordable price makes the MP180 the obvious choice for carpenters who want to have 1 machine instead of 3 and thus save operational costs, production space and time.
