SCM invests in the development of a portable CNC

SCM, a leading name in woodworking technologies, has joined forces with Springa, a spinoff of the Polytechnic University of Milan. A spinoff is a newly created company born out of research and innovation developed in an academic institution or larger company. In the case of Springa, the ideas and technology developed at the Polytechnic University of Milan have been turned into an independent business. Together with SCM, they are bringing to market a tool that could change the way we work with wood: the Goliath CNC robot.

What is Goliath and why is it special?

Goliath is a portable CNC robot designed for large woodworking projects. Unlike traditional CNC machines, which are fixed and take up a lot of space, the Goliath can be easily moved. This makes it ideal for small workshops or projects that require mobility.

How will SCM and Springa work together?

  1. Global distribution: SCM will sell Goliath worldwide under the name "scm maker". This means that Springa's innovative technology will reach customers in many countries, benefiting from SCM's global network.
  2. Financial support through PFI: SCM has signed a €300,000 PFI for a period of two years. A PFI, or Participatory Finance Instrument, is a form of investment that combines the elements of a loan with those of an equity investment. This will help Springa to develop and improve Goliath. For Springa, this PFI means not only funding, but also validation of their idea by an industry leader. For SCM, it is a way to invest in innovation without taking direct control of Springa.
  3. CrowdfundingSpringa has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise up to €2.2 million. This type of funding allows ordinary people to invest in the company by becoming small shareholders. So you can do it too. The crowdfunding campaign will remain active until October 12, 2024 on the CrowdFundMe portal (https://www.crowdfundme.it/projects/springa/)

In the case of Springa, we admired the team's skills, passion and entrepreneurial spirit and decided to get involved by joining them. Today we do this by distributing the product and will likely continue to do so in the future through a wider partnership. With this new 'maker', SCM strengthens its leadership position in CNC machining centers and continues to complement the range of solutions we offer customers in every market segment.", said Pietro Gheller, Director of the Wood Division of Scm.

With this campaign we want to strengthen our market position, optimize production and develop new products. The involvement and support of a company such as SCM is a great confirmation of the quality of work and technology developed in recent years, as well as a growth opportunity for the future of Springa"explains Lorenzo Frangi, Founder and CEO of Springa.

What does this partnership mean for the timber industry?

  1. Affordable innovation: Advanced technologies like Goliath will become more readily available for small workshops and independent craftsmen.
  2. Increased flexibility: With portable tools like the Goliath, woodworking professionals will be able to work more efficiently in a variety of spaces.
  3. Combining experience with innovationSCM brings years of industry experience, while Springa brings new ideas and cutting-edge technology.

As technology advances, we can expect to see tools that will help us create more complex and precise wood designs, while preserving the traditional art and craft of woodworking.
