Manufacture of wooden houses

What are the advantages of a timber frame house?

In Europe, the Nordic countries have been using this construction solution for centuries. In Romania, timber frame houses have been built for a long time, but on a small scale. However, being a faster, cheaper, greener and more energy efficient Compared to concrete and brick, timber or timber frame houses have started to grow rapidly in recent years in Romania.

To shed some light on this, we spoke to Class Meister representatives who have been building wooden houses for over 25 years.

"Wooden houses offer many advantages, both in terms of cost, implementation time and quality of life. A wooden house is built 80% in the workshop and 20% on the construction site, which means that within 8-10 days the structure of a house of about 100 square meters is erected on the foundation prepared in advance", specified Cătălin Dumitru - Class Meister.

The advantages of a wooden house are many, from lower construction costs to energy efficiency. Here are some of them:

1. Lower costs

  • Lower construction costs: In general, wooden houses are cheaper to build than concrete or brick.
  • Easy to maintain: Maintenance can be straightforward and relatively inexpensive if the materials are properly treated.

2. Build much faster

  • The red timber house is built 70-80% in the factory, then delivered to the construction site, where the sub-assemblies of the structure are assembled. This saves costs and time.
  • The structure for a normal house (100-150sqm) can be made in 15-20 days in the factory, plus 4-6 days for on-site assembly.
  • Depending on the house, it can be done in 2-3 months. From the foundation to the lime.

3. More spacious

  • Although it may be hard to believe, the walls of a wooden house are thinner than a brick one.
  • For example, in a wooden house, an exterior wall can have 20cm of structure + 10cm of exterior insulation, resulting in a wall of 30-35 cm. Thermally efficient.
  • For a classic house, with 25-30cm brick + 5-10cm interior and exterior plaster + 15-20cm thermal insulation, the thickness is 50-60cm, to get about the same heat transfer coefficient as a wooden house.
  • On a 150 square meter house, that can mean about 10 square meters extra in usable space.

4. More energy efficient

  • Natural insulation: Wood is an excellent material for thermal insulation, keeping warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Reduced heating and cooling costs: thanks to its insulating properties, energy consumption is considerably lower compared to other types of construction.

5. Sustainability and ecology

  • Renewable material: Wood is a natural and renewable resource, more environmentally friendly than concrete or steel.
  • Low carbon footprint: The production process of wood materials requires less energy and generates fewer carbon emissions.

6. Comfort and health

  • Natural humidity regulation: Wood 'breathes', which helps maintain optimal humidity inside, creating a healthy environment.
  • Aesthetics and pleasant atmosphere: Wood gives a natural look and a warm and comfortable feeling in your home.

7. Design flexibility

  • Versatility: Wood allows a wide range of architectural styles and can be easily customized.
  • Fast construction: Wooden houses can be built much faster than concrete or brick, especially if modern technologies such as prefabricated panels are used.

8. Durability

  • Earthquake resistance: Wood is a flexible material, able to absorb seismic shocks better than other rigid materials.
  • Modern treatments: With today's fire, insect and moisture protection technologies, the durability of wood is significantly increased.

These advantages make wooden houses an attractive choice for those who want a sustainable, comfortable and economical lifestyle.
