The importance of lighting in kitchen furniture

In the search for kitchen furniture, customers invest the most resources of time, money and energy. And no wonder, it's the room around which most activities revolve, it's the heart of the home that brings all the family members and guests together.

Light has the power to change the atmosphere and the way space is perceived in terms of size and functionality. When it comes to lighting, however, users only realise its importance once they have set up the kitchen and ordered the furniture.

Integrating lighting systems into kitchen furniture is an important differentiator, adding value and contributing to a comfortable, welcoming and harmonious ambience.

In a properly lit kitchen, the three types of lighting are combined: general, functional and accent.

General lighting is the one that gives the general appearance of a room without focusing on the performance of certain tasks. It is represented by the light source mounted on the ceiling, whether it is a suspended chandelier or recessed spotlights.

If the only source of light in the kitchen is the traditional light from the ceiling, then the work areas, which are usually facing the wall, will be shaded.

Functional lighting allows specific activities to be carried out in different areas of the kitchen: on the worktop, in drawers or cupboards, in the sink area.

Use spotlights or LED tape for the bottom of the upper fixtures. For drawers or the inside of furniture fixtures, you can fit profiles with LED strip and sensor, which activate on movement.

Use aluminium profiles to integrate the LED strip: they protect it from dust and water and the opaque diffuser ensures even light distribution.

Choose the right solution depending on your countertop finish

Regardless of the type of light chosen, its reflection is annoying. In the case of glossy countertops, use a slightly angled profile and mount it towards the back of the body so that the light does not fall directly on the countertop and reflect off its surface.

Spotlights are a good solution if the countertop is matt. Install them at a distance of  approximately 50 cm from each other so that the light cones overlap by 50%.

Warm, cool, neutral or RGB light

You can also integrate warm, cool or neutral light fixtures in the same kitchen, depending on the type of activity, mood or time of day.

RGB LED strips along with a multitude of intelligent controllers  which you can choose from, gives you the possibility to set the light in different colours and tones.
