Furniture rules from interior designers

Choosing furniture, colours or decorations for a room can be a simple matter if you call in an interior designer or follow a few rules of furniture design.

How do they manage to find solutions when we are so different? I've tried to identify some common furniture rules that interior designers follow in their projects. They're worth keeping in mind if you're planning a home interior redesign. They are not mandatory, they are about vision, approach, inspiration.

Approach the room space as a city, with different heights and proportions, combinations of shapes, sizes and colours.

According to this approach, it would mean avoiding buying or furnishing the interior with furniture pieces or decorative objects of the same size. If they were all the same size, either all small or all large, the room would look cluttered.

Avoid putting dark furniture in small spaces.

There is a tendency to choose heavy, dark and bulky furniture. About this, designers say it is one of the most inappropriate choices for such spaces and yet one of the most common mistakes. Such a choice makes the room seem smaller and cramped on top of that. Light colours that reflect light, such as white, cream, grey or pastels, are suitable in such rooms.

Don't use one or too few lighting sources.

Lighting is important for any space. Lighting decisions should be integrated into the design from the outset. Too little, too little or too little light can make people feel uncomfortable rather than comfortable.

But the atmosphere in a room is not given by the bright light but by the diversity of lighting sources. Various models and heights of floor lamps, table lamps, table lamps, all with warm light, are used. The warm light seems to warm the space and induce a state of relaxation and intimacy. White, neon-like fluorescent light creates a cold, irritating atmosphere.

Don't fill the space with too large a table.

In many homes, the big table in the middle of the room is used and you can just squeeze around it. Here we have to be careful not to imagine more than reality allows. Especially if you live in a small apartment, buy a large table only if you are convinced that it is absolutely necessary and you will use it.

If you can't do without it, opt for a round table that can seat more than one person or an extendable version. Either way, the decision to create a dining area should only be made after all the necessary measurements have been taken to make sure there is enough space and then that you don't get too big a table.

Don't buy furniture impulsively.

It's quite possible that the impression left by the furniture you have your eye on is also influenced by the atmosphere of the place where it is displayed. Try imagining it in the space to see if it would have the same effect. To do this, consider the proportions and dimensions of the space in the shop in comparison with the space where it is to be placed.

A large space will give the impression that the furniture is smaller and you will be tempted to estimate without measuring it. You run the risk of either overcrowding the room or furnishing it inappropriately.

Don't clutter the space with lots of small pieces.

It's tempting to buy a lot of small pieces of furniture or a bunch of small decorative items. It just seems so much more economical than buying a quality piece of furniture or an amazing decorative item created by a designer. In fact even small things cost money and the more the more you spend. And the resulting effect is chaos not harmony and cohesion.

Get informed about trends but keep your style.

It might be difficult in an advanced world, where new ideas emerge every day. Yet to have a unique and personal space, choices should be based on personal aesthetic and style preferences. Ask yourself how you would like the space to feel, what colours you like, what textures you prefer. Do you like wood? Aim to personalise the space as you feel comfortable. Stay on top of trends, but ignore them if they don't fit the style and atmosphere you want.

The last of the "rules" leads you to think that it is impossible to have one set of furniture rules that fits all, but we can accept them, adapt them, be inspired, dream.

  • Good advice for which thank you! and I like round and oval tables, for the kitchen I bought a small table, 60X90, but extensible, now I do not know how to organize the room in the sleeping area and living area ... I can not decide on a separating object, be it a shelf, be it a decorative panel ...
