In the sawing process, bandsaw blades do a great job of turning a log into valuable material for construction work. To produce the highest quality prisms and planks from each log, the saw blades must be properly maintained by sharpening and waxing their teeth. Only well-maintained saw blades guarantee maximum cutting performance
Tooth brushing is just as important as sharpening
Both sharpening and sharpening are equally important for the maintenance of the saw blade. As the teeth of the blade grind and warp during cutting, they need regular sharpening to restore sharp edges and profile. Secondly, each saw blade must have sharpened teeth to produce material with a high surface quality and to effectively remove sawdust from the cut log. The bandsaw blade has correctly cambered teeth when they are accurately and uniformly 'offset' from the body of the blade.
The tooth pruning pattern is "left angled / right angled / straight", where the left and right teeth are for opening or cutting the material, and the right tooth is for removing sawdust from wood. The recommended values for teeth sharpening are different for each type of cloth and profile. It is essential to tailor the amount of tooth planing to the type of wood you will be cutting. For example, we recommend using a smaller tooth size for hardwoods and a larger one for softwoods. You can find the exact recommended values on the saw blade box.
If the tooth pitch is too small, the blade cuts straight and of good quality, but slowly. If the tooth pitch is too large, the blade will cut with jerky movements, producing wavy cuts and generally affecting the quality of the wood cut. Saw blades with improperly set teeth can quickly overheat and eventually break.
Before starting the tooth-polishing process, the operator must properly prepare the cloth. First of all, the cloth must be cleaned to remove resin, oil, sap or other fluids. Secondly, it must have the edges deburred, either manually with a deburring tool or automatically on a sharpening machine such as the BMS500/600.
Choosing your washing machine
Wood-Mizer offers a wide range of bandsaw teeth planing machines, allowing fast, precise and uniform teeth planing.
BMT100 - Manual single-sided single-sided ironer is an economical, precise and easy-to-use equipment for low-volume operations. This device works with 25-75 mm wide blades and is hand-operated (with one hand you trim the teeth with a crank handle and with the other hand you advance the blade). It trims the teeth on one side of the blade in one pass, so you must remember to turn the blade to the other side after trimming the teeth on the first side. To maintain the correct tooth planing pattern, you must plan every 3rd tooth of the blade. Since the planer is manual, planing a veneer takes on average 7-10 minutes. The BMT100 allows very precise tooth planing.
Before you start the tooth-polishing process with BMT100, you need to:
- Precisely adjust the height of the blade in the clamp - Wood-Mizer recommends setting the bottom of the gap between the teeth of the blade 1.0-1.5 mm below the upper clamping edge,
- Adjust the reference value - Wood-Mizer recommends setting the point on the tooth at one third of the height of the tooth from the tip,
- Reset the dial indicator.
It is essential to adjust the correct position of the stopper, which stops the blade and sets the right point for bending the tooth. A dial indicator shows the amount of tooth loosening. And the support arms that hold the blade need readjusting according to the width of the blade.
BMT150 - Manual double-sided ironer is another economical, precise, easy to use and efficient tool in the Wood-Mizer range. It is double-sided, so it cuts two tines simultaneously (left/right) and does not require the operator to turn the blade. This machine can plane 25-75 mm wide boards with 6-32 mm tooth spacing. It takes about 3-4 minutes to plane a cloth. It is manually operated by a ratchet lever that activates 2 planing screws and simultaneously advances the cloth with a pusher. Blade height adjustment is done by replacing the pins and a fine adjustment knob. In order to ensure the highest precision of tooth planing, the BMT150 is equipped with a "Set Master Gauge" tool for checking the tooth planing value and fine adjustment of the planing screws.
One of Wood-Mizer's most popular Wood-Mizer is BMT 200/250 - Double-sided tooth planer, which is available in two versions. The simpler version, the BMT200, is manual, equipped with a crank handle that activates the waxing screws and advances the blade. You can upgrade the BMT200 with an extension kit to a higher version, the BMT250.
Electric version of the BMT250 has a 0.18 kW single-phase motor with gearbox and simple control unit. There are two teeth planed in one cycle in this tooth planer, which means the process is faster. On average, it takes about 2-3 minutes to wax a cloth. The BMT250 tooth planer is often combined with the BMS250 saw blade sharpener.
Each waxing screw and anvil are connected to a separate indicator, which must be calibrated before starting the waxing process. Two dials display the waxing values - one for the right offset and one for the left offset. It's good practice to use the Set Master Gauge to check the ceap from time to time. The electric version of the BMT250 has a simple control box with a tooth counter, on which you set the number of teeth, and the sensor will stop the process at the end. In addition the BMT250 has a voltage indicator, master switch and a manual/automatic mode switch. With the BMT250, you can frame 25-75 mm wide blades with 13-32 mm blade tooth spacing
BMT 300 - Pneumatic single side planer is designed for professional and high volume operations. It is often combined with the BMS500/600 professional saw sharpening machine. The BMT300 is an automatic tooth honing machine that works in multiple operating modes, utilizes various diagnostic functions to inspect machine components and sharpen teeth correctly. If necessary, it can repair over-polishing teeth. It uses two power sources: the electric motor (2x) 24V DC to power the blade pusher and feed mechanism and compressed air (min. 4 bar) to power the clamping system, waxing screw and cleaning nozzle. The BMT300 tooth planer works on one side only, so it is only possible to plane the blade on one side at a time, which means you have to turn the blade to plane the other side. It's extremely accurate within the tolerances required by the user and it's fast - 3 minutes to plane a cloth that has no teeth damaged by a nail or a hard piece of wood.
On the control panel, there is an LCD screen with several buttons for operation. It displays all process parameters, which you can adjust in real time. From here, enter the number of teeth/cycles, the upper/lower limits of tooth ceaping, the type of clamp used, the maximum number of pattern errors set, the unit of measurement, the user language. You can also navigate in the diagnostic menu and run the tests by checking the machine functions (pusher, clamp, curve, waxing screw, sensor); also from here you can run the calibration mode or the tooth-polishing inspection mode
Follow these tips and recommendations and you will enjoy a long and successful operation of your Wood-Mizer Wood-Mizer saw band saw tooth grinding machine.
