How to get rid of wood bugs? Practical test at the Wood Hub

Under Wood Hub at BIFE-SIM 2024, we had the opportunity to test together with Andrei Iliescu, Deposib Expert specialist, one of the most effective solutions for controlling wood insects: Bochemit Plus I Eradication.

Why do we need treatment?

The presence of insects in wood can be seen by the holes visible on the surface, but these are just the "tip of the iceberg". As Andrei explained to us, the visible holes actually indicate that the adult insects have already left the wood, leaving behind eggs or larvae ready to continue the destructive cycle.

"It is essential to understand that apparently healthy wood near an attacked area may already be infested at the egg or larvae level," emphasizes Andrei Iliescu.

How do we apply the treatment correctly?

For effective treatment, Andrei recommends the following steps:

  1. Removing the shell - This is the essential first step, as insects can take shelter under the shell
  2. Solution preparation:
    - Dilution 1:9 (1 kg product to 9 liters water)
    - For restorations or old wood you can also use technical spirit instead of water
  3. Apply:
    - Spraying - minimum two coats
    - Brush - minimum two coats
    - Immersion (50 minutes for maximum penetration)

Practical results

As part of the demonstration, we treated visibly infested pieces of wood and sectioned them after 24 hours to check the effectiveness of the treatment. The results showed that the active substance effectively penetrates the wood, neutralizing the insects at all stages of development.

Important things to remember:

- Treatment should be applied on all surfaces wood, not only in visibly affected areas
- Drying time between coats: 4-24 hours, depending on environmental conditions
- The product offers at least 10 years preventive protection for indoor wood
- Regular check every 2 years is recommended

Safety measures

- Use only in well-ventilated rooms
- Wearing protective equipment (gloves, glasses)
- Do not apply to wood in direct contact with skin, food or drinking water
- The product is not recommended for children's furniture or toys

Conclusion

Bochemit Plus I Eradication has proven to be an effective solution for both treating infested wood and preventing insect attacks. The key to success lies in the correct application and thorough treatment of all surfaces, even those apparently unaffected.

  • If I use this product on a piece of bare timber that I have carved as a decorative decoy duck, can I then oil and wax it successfully? Also is it safe to apply the product BEFORE I have finished carving - would it be toxic to grip tightly whilst carving? Thank you for your time.

    • Hello, Chris!
      Thank you for your question!
The insect protection product is designed to be applied directly onto the timber and should be allowed to fully dry before applying oil and wax. We recommend applying the product after you have finished carving, as the substance is meant to remain absorbed within the wood. Continuing to carve after application could remove some of the protective layer, as it is concentrated on the surface and can be affected by further work.
For your safety, it is advisable to wear protective gloves when applying the insect protection product, as it should not come into direct contact with your skin. Wear the protective gloves also when applying oil and wax afterward.
Please keep in mind that the insect protection product should not come into contact with food or water, and it is not recommended for use on items intended for children's furniture or toys.
I hope this answer helps you!
      All the best!
