Ars Fabrilis Wood School - tradition, education and creation
Woodworking School (Ars Fabrilis Officina)opened in 2024, is a place where craftsmanship takes on new educational and cultural values. Founded by Irina and Ciprian Pop, the school focuses on passing on traditional knowledge and values to new generations in an interactive and exciting way. Over 40 children, aged between 8 and 16, attend weekly classes where they learn to carve, weave and sew.
Ciprian and Irina Pop have an interesting life story that led them to their educational mission. The two met in the US, where they worked after graduation, but chose to return to Romania to follow their dreams. Although neither is originally from Bistrița, the city has become their home. Ciprian, a former employee of a multinational corporation, decided to give up his corporate career to fulfill his passion for woodworking. This radical change, made at the age of 40, has allowed him to create a unique space where craftsmanship takes on an educational value. Through the Woodworking School, the Pops aim to inspire younger generations to creatively use their hands and understand the importance of manual labor.
Their initiative keeps craft traditions alive while offering significant benefits for children's personal development. Hands-on activities improve dexterity, stimulate creativity and promote patience in a world where haste often dominates the daily routine. The school is planning to extend the program to include workshops for adults, helping them to relax by reconnecting with nature and traditional crafts.
Cluj's Silversmiths and "The New Wood Culture"
The coopers of Cluj are a community of modern craftsmen who bring wood to life through unique creations, combining tradition with innovation. Their work is an integral part of the international phenomenon "The New Wood Culture", a trend that brings to the forefront the rediscovery and adaptation of old crafts to contemporary needs and sensibilities. It emphasizes the design of objects, their ergonomics and the link between craftsmen, the raw material and the end users.
The objects created by the carvers - from honey spoons to ladles, spatulas or butter knives - are designed not just as kitchen tools, but as pieces that enrich the everyday experience. Each piece has a story that starts in the forest or orchard, where the wood is carefully selected according to the principles of sustainability and the circular economy.
Understanding the grain, texture and properties of each type of wood - be it oak, beech, acacia or cherry - is essential to create functional and aesthetic objects. The coopers from Cluj show how tradition and craftsmanship can coexist harmoniously with today's concerns about environmental protection, the circular economy and the promotion of sustainable products.
