At the Serra stand at Ligna 2025, Markus Orlow with the characteristic pride of German manufacturers, presented the company's latest achievement: SX 140. "I'll show you here our new product, the SX 140," Markus begins his demonstration of a saw that seems to raise the bar in its class.
"The SX 140 is our newest machine. We have a maximum cutting length of 8 meters for a completely new frame design for heavier logs. The maximum diameter is 140 centimeters, mobile and stationary," Markus explains the specifications that place this machine in the top professional category.
Wintersteiger computer: next generation control
The first feature that draws attention to SX 140 is the control system. "The second new thing is the computer. It's from Wintersteiger and Serra. We have a big screen, big touchscreen," Markus emphasizes the innovation that completely changes the operator experience.
This collaboration between Serra and Wintersteiger is no coincidence - since 2019, Serra has been part of the Austrian Wintersteiger Group, combining German sawmaking expertise with Austrian advanced control technology.
Ergonomics and control: hydraulics at the center
"The hydraulics are in the middle of the operator and we have a new joystick. Every button has a function," Markus details the control system that seems designed for heavy use. The central positioning of the hydraulic controls and the new multi-function joystick show that Serra has thought seriously about operator comfort and efficiency.
Scalable power: from 22 to 37 hp
SX 140 offers flexibility in the choice of power: "This type of machine comes with three different engines. The smallest is 22 kW and the largest is 37 kW." This wide range allows it to suit different needs and budgets, from occasional to intensive industrial use.
Technical specifications:
- Belt wheel diameter900 mm for maximum stability
- Strip width120 mm or 140 mm, depending on application
- Maximum cutting length: 8 meters standard, extensible
- Maximum log diameter: 140 cm
Practical innovations: the sawdust container
A feature that demonstrates attention to detail: "You can open the sawdust container in any position on the machine. During use, you can open it manually. You give it position and it opens every second or third cut."
This may seem like a minor feature, but for someone who processes dozens of logs a day, being able to empty the sawdust without having to stop work completely is a real productivity advantage.
Professional locking system: up to 4 lifters
"We have two locks. You can install a third or fourth locking system. To lock the logs, five two-bar slides to level the log with the pre-cutter. It's more comfortable with more hydraulics," Markus explains the handling system that allows very heavy logs to be processed safely.
New frame: stability for extreme loads
Markus proudly points out the complete redesign of the frame: "I can show you the new frame design. Here is the water tank for cleaning the saw band. 21-liter hydraulic pump, a quiet hydraulic pump."
"This is the frame, specifically for this machine, which is more stable than the KE or ME 110, so we can cut bigger and heavier logs. It's a machine for professionals," he continues, emphasizing that SX 140 is not just a marginal improvement, but a real qualitative leap.
Extensibility: extended frame for long cuts
For special applications, Serra offers maximum flexibility: "If you want, you can buy an extended frame and have a longer cutting length." This modularity allows the machine to be adapted to specific requirements without having to buy a completely different machine.
Serra and Wintersteiger: the perfect combination
Story SX 140 cannot be understood without the context of Serra's acquisition by Wintersteiger in 2019. This merger combined:
- Serra expertise in mobile saw construction (30+ years of experience)
- Wintersteiger technology in control and automation systems
- Global network Wintersteiger in over 80 countries
The result is SX 140 - a car that retains the 'Made in Germany' ruggedness but adds Austrian smart control.
Distribution in Romania: 24Wood and Katharina Seiler
"Our distributor in Romania is Katharina Seiler from 24Wood. Perfect distributor for the market. She has been in Romania for, I think, 20 years and is very pleasant to work with," says Markus, emphasizing the importance of local partnership.
24Wood, through Katharina Seiler, is not just a distributor, but a partner who understands the specific Romanian market and can offer real support for Serra technology.
Who is SX 140 for?
According to the specifications presented by Markus, SX 140 clearly targets the professional segment:
- Primary processing of heavy logs
- Cutting workshops with high productivity requirements
- Entrepreneurs working with large logs
- Sawmills who want mobility without compromising on quality
With the Wintersteiger control system and up to 37 hp, this machine is not for amateurs, but for professionals who need consistent performance.
