At the stand Wood-Mizer from Ligna 2025, Marius Frățilă introduced me to the MP410 prototype - the first industrial four-sided planing machine, capable of processing both green and dry wood from Wood-Mizer.
The problem no one saw
"Let me show you what I really liked this year at the Wood-Mizer!", Marius begins with the enthusiasm of a man who has just discovered the solution to an old problem. And the problem was a real one: the industry needed a machine that could efficiently mill green wood - something that traditional machines have difficulty doing.
Wood-Mizer decided to tackle this unfulfilled niche. The result? The MP410 - a machine that promises to change the rules of the game in industrial planing.
Raw power in the service of precision
We have both top and bottom mechanized rollers driven by dedicated motors. Two 5.5 kW side motors take care of the material feed, while two 11 kW motors for the top and bottom spindles do the actual planing work.
The speed can be adjusted between 5 and 25 meters per minute - a flexibility that allows adaptation to different types of material and desired finishing qualities. For green wood, which is more difficult to process due to its moisture content and different consistency, this speed variability becomes essential.
The strategy of a giant that won't stop
What makes the MP410 special isn't just that it can handle green wood - it's that Wood-Mizer has used all the experience it has accumulated over 40 years to create something truly new. The company, which has over 1,000 dealers worldwide and has been present in Ligna since 1994, is not content to be just a manufacturer of ribbon saws.
From the world's first portable bandsaw, Wood-Mizer has expanded into complete industrial lines (like WM5500 with MR250 multirip), hobby equipment (the new LX30) and now - with the MP410 - into the specialized green wood chipping territory.
Marius mentions that the price will be announced for those who subscribe to Wood-Mizer's social media channels - a strategy that shows that even established companies understand the importance of online communities.
The experiment that could change the industry
The MP410 is still a prototype, but its presence at Ligna 2025 signals that Wood-Mizer is ready to make the leap to series production. For a company that previously revolutionized the woodworking industry with the first portable bandsaw, this new product could have a similar impact.
It's the kind of innovation that comes when decades of experience meets real market needs. Wood-Mizer isn't trying to invent something completely new - it's trying to do better something the industry already does, but with limitations.
For entrepreneurs who work with green wood or want to optimize their production processes, the MP410 is worth watching. If the prototype proves to be as successful as other Wood-Mizer innovations, we could be witnessing a new revolution in industrial planing.
Until then, it remains to be seen when Wood-Mizer will be ready to move from prototype to commercial production - and at what price.
