The roof of Oslo Airport is unusual in that it has a special design in the shape of airplane wings. Not surprising for an airport, except that the wings are made of wood and 91 meters wide. We learned about the project from Stefan Groot, managing director of the company that built the roof. The work is part of an integrated concept to expand the airport's capacity based on ecological principles.
According to Stefan, it all started with the idea of the roof being made of wood and shaped like the wings of an airplane. "It would also be economical, it would stand the test of time, it would be durable. From a design point of view it would have to look really good, and people would feel at home when they came back from their travels."
The solution proposed by the company that Stefan now runs was what the client wanted, also in terms of rigorous environmental protection requirements. Given the scale of this timber work it is interesting to see how they realized this construction. You can see how much wood they used, the size of the planks and how they processed it in the video below.
You can smell the wood!
