Nest in the tree - experiencing bird life

American artist Jayson Fann designs and builds nests for people. He lives in California's Big Sur Valley and collaborates with the International Center for Art and Culture Big Sur Spirit Garden, where those who want to experience bird life can buy them. But they can test out tree nest living first in the only nest you can stay in at Treebones Resort.

Another way to experience life close to nature

The cages do not offer any particular comfort, precisely because the person who proposes such an experiment wants to live as close to nature as possible. They have no running water or other such facilities. But they do have mattresses and pillows. The problem is that on rainy days the nest does not offer the necessary protection. There are, however, some fairly large nests where a tent can be set up inside. For those who want a more authentic experience in nature, the tree nest is the perfect place.

The nests are made from branches that Fann gathers from the local forests. He prefers eucalyptus branches because they are more flexible. The Treebones public nest is generously sized, accommodating 8 people. But it's not the standard size. Fann can make small nests for 2 people, but also very large nests where there is enough space for 30 people.

Jayson says he started nesting when he was 12-13 years old. He has a great respect for trees and chooses his branches in such a way that they don't harm him in any way. The best branches are the ones that come from the top of the trees. They are mature, strong and have curved, spiral shapes, an advantage when building nests.

After being stripped of leaves, the branches are sorted by size. They are then assembled like pieces of a game to make a flowing spiral. When it reaches a certain size, the nest is transported to the future site where it is placed on a strong base already built. Sometimes, when the nest is large, a crane is needed to make the placement. Once it is put in place the ladder is built and the mattress and cushions are put in place.

The nests are a way of living in communion with nature, with the environment. Proceeds from the sale of the nests go to the Big Sur Spirit Garden Centre to sponsor artwork and environmental projects.
