Over 10,000 pieces restored or reconditioned in the last 4 years

I talk every chance I get about old inherited furniture, which has, first and foremost, sentimental value. Newer or older, precious style furniture or just a bookcase taken by parents when the cupboards crammed with books couldn't cope, they all represent memories and we would like to keep them. On the other hand, old furniture is also very durable. Preserving memories can mean keeping furniture looking as it used to, but it can also mean changing the colour of old furniture or keeping only parts of it, making new pieces more suited to the new home or style of furnishing. But to do either one or the other you need someone skilled, who understands the sentimental value of old furniture, who will restore or recondition furniture according to your wishes.

We have to admit that when we think about a cosmetic or furniture makeover, questions arise:

  • Where can I find a craftsman?
  • How long will it take?
  • Do they repair the furniture at my place or do I take it to the workshop?
  • If I have to take it to the workshop, where do I find transport and people to load and unload?
  • If they fix it at home, where are we "hiding" during this time? That there's bound to be dust and smell!
  • Can the same craftsman re-clean the chairs so that they no longer move and I no longer have to worry about guests falling in with them, remove the white stains that have appeared on the table and re-upholster the sofa?
  • Will the craftsman understand that I want to keep parts of the old furniture, not a total transformation?

And surely these are just a few of the issues that bother you. Fortunately, compared to 15-20 years ago, when it was difficult to find a workshop that could cope with all these demands, real furniture restoration and reconditioning factories have now developed. One of them is SaveMob.

I have already told you about them on various occasions, for example about Chippendale furniture saved from total decay due to decay, but also about refurbishing old pieces of furniture with a result much more suitable for a modern and bright decor. Now I just want to highlight just three of the services that you get by calling such a factory and that make your life so much easier.

Valuation, packing and transport is done by the company's employees. This avoids time wasted finding a means of transport, packing problems so that no further damage occurs, finding people willing to load and unload heavy pieces of furniture.

All operations necessary for the restoration or reconditioning of furniture are carried out in the same place. The company has specialists for every field: people who know how to apply special products such as shellac, upholsterers who know the old methods and know how to work with old materials such as zebra or arches, for example, specialists and methods for cleaning the old finish layer, restoring the missing carving, etc.

Even for more special pieces, such as pianos, pendulums, old clocks, there are specialists who not only restore the object, but also restore it functionally.

Having a small factory-sized workspace, organised as such, makes working time much shorter. The clear organisation of the workflow, the existence of dedicated spaces for each operation, makes it possible to work on several products at the same time without messing them up or finishing mistakes. This greatly reduces waiting time until the product is ready to go home.

I was talking the other day with Mr. Mihai Save, who set up the SaveMob restoration and reconditioning workshop, and he told me that in the 4 years they have been operating, they have restored and reconditioned over 10,000 pieces of furniture or old wooden doors and windows. It is continually concerned with providing the most suitable space for such activities. Recently, during the holidays, in order not to disrupt the flow, it expanded by setting up a new space for finishing and drying products, a dust-free space. This has increased finishing capacity and reduced the time spent on a part.

Do you want to keep your memories? Don't throw away old furniture and objects. There are places where you can restore or refurbish them, and as I said, SaveMob is one of them.

  • Mrs Mihaela Radu, you are no stranger to woodworking and furniture finishing. 10.000 pieces restored or reconditioned in 4 years means an average of more than 8 pieces per day, one per hour... Restorations are slow, manual, demanding and... expensive processes! Consolidation, replacement of missing parts and refinishing of old furniture does not happen on a conveyor belt. I think that the author of the article taken up by Wood Magazine either didn't hear what he was told or typed some figures wrong.
More serious is that no one has noticed this enormity (or has not bothered to point it out) until me, even though it has been 6 months since you posted this material.
