LA310PN is ICA's water-based semi-matte exterior wood varnish.
After staining and protection against pests and mildew, the wood must be protected from the weather, sunlight or mechanical action (scratching, knocks). Special exterior varnishes are used for this. One such varnish is ICA's LA310PN. It is very suitable for DIY enthusiasts because it can also be applied with a brush. In general, water-based exterior exterior products manufactured for professional applications have a high viscosity. It is expected that they will be applied in factories, with special devices, by people experienced in the field. The fact that such a professional product is formulated to be applied with a brush is a gain. It is applied with a brush, but can also be applied with a spray gun. Find one very suitable for such applications here.
The exterior wood varnish is semi-matt, i.e. 35-40 gloss, which is a pleasant moderate gloss. It is easy to apply, has consistency, elasticity and outdoor resistance. Before application the wood must bossed in white with 150 or 180 grit sandpaper or medium abrasive sponges. For staining apply a coat of colored impregnating or exterior resistant stain.
The varnish is applied with the brush exactly as it is in the can. It looks thick, but this helps you apply a larger amount in one stroke. If it still seems too thick you can dilute with water, but no more than 10%. It is best to avoid thinning because wood "loves" water and any added amount will be absorbed and thus raise the grain of the wood. The surface will no longer be smooth and you will have to sand again. In the can the varnish is opalescent. As it dries it becomes transparent.
After 4-6 hours apply another coat of varnish without sanding. If you want to sand before applying another coat, wait at least 12 hours. Sanding varnish layers is made with fine abrasive sponges or 240 or 280 grit sandpaper and is necessary to achieve a pleasant-touch surface and to improve adhesion to the substrate.
Influence of atmospheric humidity
Being a water-based product it is influenced by the humidity in the atmosphere. If it is high, it may take a little longer to dry and if it is low, the varnish dries faster. In the first 4-6 weeks after application, if the humidity is very high or it rains directly on the surface, opalescent white spots may appear. Don't panic because they will disappear with the first rays of the sun. Happens to all water-based products used outdoors.
