Sharpening machines from Wood-Mizer - the latest equipment for the maintenance of bandsaw blades

Every saw blade needs proper maintenance to cut efficiently and accurately. In the sawing process, even the best saw blade will sooner or later grind down, its edges reducing their ability to cut efficiently and the teeth of the blade losing their proper shape. There is a way to avoid this, by sharpening the blades using a specialized machine, a sanding disk and mineral oil for sanding. After sharpening, you need to sharpen the teeth of the blade to prepare the saw blade for cutting.

One of the essential pieces of equipment for maintaining saw blades is the sharpening machine, which will restore the sharp edges of the blade and the correct tooth profile. Wood-Mizer offers several saw blade sharpening machines - the affordable BMS250 model and the more advanced BMS500 and BMS600 models. Although they differ in design, they share some common features - they all use contoured CBN sharpening wheels and have the sanding head locked at an angle, ensuring the best fit and consistency of the wheel to the blade profile.

CBN grinding technology

Wood-Mizer recommends the use of CBN sanding technology, which uses a super abrasive, cubic shaped boron nitride material for the best sharpening results. CBN particles are as hard as the hardest material on earth - diamond. They provide much better grinding than traditional aluminum oxide or silicon carbide abrasive wheels because they don't melt quickly and don't burn the material. A CBN disk has a profile that exactly matches the tooth geometry of the blade. Wood-Mizer offers saw blades with several different tooth profiles, and for each blade profile there is a dedicated CBN profile. If you choose the wrong CBN profile, it will damage the abrasive disk, warp the blade profile or even cause the sanding head on the sharpener to break.

CBN sanding technology requires mineral oil for cooling and cleaning. Wood-Mizer recommends the use of mineral oil with technical specifications ACP1 or ACP2 to effectively clean the abrasive structure of the disc and cool surfaces that heat up during the sanding process. This helps the CBN abrasive disk to be used for a long time with the best in-service performance.

Features of Wood-Mizer sharpening machines

Wood-Mizer's range of saw-blade sharpening machines starts with the BMS250, a high quality automatic sharpening machine designed for regular and reliable blade maintenance in a professional sawmill. The BMS250 machine, unlike its simpler version - the BMS200, has a sanding head cover that protects the inner mechanism and a control panel integrated into the electrical panel. The sharpener is driven by a 0.18 kW (230V) electric motor, which drives the 127 mm grinding disk at a rotation speed of 2700 rpm. It sharpens 25-50 mm wide saw blades as efficiently as possible thanks to features such as automatic stop, variable feed speed, exhaust nozzle and oil wiper pads. The installation of the blade on the machine and the procedure of adjusting the sanding depth and pusher movement is simple and effortless. Wood-Mizer recommends running saw blades through the machine in 2-3 cycles for best sharpening results, which generally takes less than 4-5 minutes.

Two other sharpening machines in the Wood-Mizer offer are BMS500 and BMS600. Their design meets the requirements of high-capacity saws that require continuous sharpening of the blades. Both models are compatible with a 203 mm sanding disk and are driven by a 0.75 kW (400V) electric motor running at 4280 rpm. For improved efficiency in the sharpening process, the BMS500 and BMS600 models feature an automatic deburring device, automatic tooth counter stop and an easy-to-access control panel. Sharpening a 25-75 mm wide saw blade with 13-29 mm tooth spacing generally requires a single cycle of 3-4 minutes. The BMS600 model differs from the BMS500 by being equipped with a more efficient oil pump, larger oil reservoir and improved oil application nozzles.
