German master carpenter Christian Rummel, who has been living in Romania for many years, invites you to a unique 5-day workshop dedicated to traditional building techniques using natural materials such as clay, hemp, straw and lime. The "Construim Natural" event will take place from July 21-25 in the picturesque village of Richiș in Sibiu County, Romania.
I first met Christian in 2019 at a Gutex wood fiber insulation workshoporganized by Naturalpaint in Cisnădioara. Since then, we had the opportunity to meet again at various events in the construction field, such as nZEB Week, but also to visit some of his sites around the country. Christian is a passionate specialist with a wealth of experience in carpentry and restoration of monuments, about whom we have written extensively in a previous article.
The "We Build Natural" workshop is open to students, craftspeople and architects eager to learn practical and future-oriented. Participants will make several wall sections, about 12 compartments, which will be walled between beams, using traditional techniques with clay, hemp-glass and straw. High quality clay will be mined on site.
The participation fee is €250 per person, excluding accommodation and meals. But the organizers encourage free camping on site, with a hot shower and outdoor toilet. Participants can cook together outside to keep costs to a minimum. Information on accommodation and meals with local providers can also be provided on request.
The evenings will harmoniously combine theory and fun. There will be presentations and in-depth discussions on the thermal properties of the walls, the dew point, comparisons between traditional and modern techniques. The campfire and music will create the perfect setting for socializing and exchange of ideas and experiences between trainees.
Along with Christian Rummel, the event's trainers include Tobias Schönemann, a master carpenter, clay builder and music teacher with extensive experience, and Alexandru Constantin Postu, a hemp insulation expert and craftsman specializing in lime, hemp and clay.
The "We Build Natural" workshop is a unique opportunity for young professionals to learn both the theory and especially the practice of using green building materials such as clay, hemp, straw and lime. They will learn how these materials can be used effectively to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings. The unique setting of the camp will also facilitate networking and exchange of experiences between participants.
