What is lazura
Lazura is the name given to materials for staining and protecting wood used outdoors. They are semi-transparent staining solutions, sometimes also called exterior impregnating agents, which contain dyes, resins (oils) and additives resistant to UV radiation, weathering, mould and fungi and sometimes insects.
To be effective outdoors, wood finishing products need to meet several conditions:
- to penetrate as deeply as possible into the wood for better and longer-lasting protection;
- be resilient, so as not to be affected when the wood changes in size due to moisture variation;
- to allow moisture exchange between the wood and the outside environment, in other words to let the wood breathe;
- be resistant to UV radiation.
Let's see if Kreidezeit's colored lazura meets these conditions.

How oil-based colored lacquer protects wood
Products based on natural oils meet all the above conditions and are often preferred to synthetic ones. By using them, wood is protected while retaining its natural appearance.
Natural oils can penetrate much deeper into the wood, providing very good protection. Their molecular structure makes this possible, with the molecules of linseed oil - the oil that makes up the latex - being 50 times smaller than those of synthetic products.
Lack of film lets the wood move when there are variations in humidity. In the case of film-forming products, wood movement can cause the film to crack. A cracked film can no longer protect the object to which it has been applied. This is not the case when wood is protected with an oil-based varnish.
The film-free finish doesn't clog the wood or cover its pores, allowing the natural exchange of moisture with the environment.
Kreidezeit oil-based lazura is colored with natural pigments. They are resistant to UV radiation and do not discolor over time. In fact, they are what make the lazure resistant to the sun. A totally transparent product is never recommended for the protection of wood standing outside. It is UV radiation that changes the natural color of the wood and attacks its grain. To prevent it from reaching the wood, you need to put a barrier in its way, and the barrier is pigments. That is why even when you want to preserve the natural color of wood, products that are not totally transparent are recommended.
What kind of wooden objects can it be applied to
Lazura can be applied directly to untreated wood used outdoors. It is sufficient polishing it white after which the treatment is done by applying 2-3 coats of lazure, with drying in between.
It can be used for staining and protecting wooden houses, wood used for house cladding, for protecting wooden fences, garden furniture, garden gazebos, pergolas and terraces. Not recommended for decks and outdoor flooring.
The application is simple, with a brush or a brush trowel. Do not over-apply. If the product remains unabsorbed by the wood it must be wiped off.
Why oil-based colored varnish
Oil-based products are a great solution for protecting wood outdoors. Simple application and easy maintenance are the main advantages. Refinishing with colored lacquer is done by applying one more coat without any further preparation. The signal to apply one more coat is the dry and dull appearance of the finish. This appearance is the result of the oil "washing off" in the rain. To remedy the situation, apply another coat of colored or clear lacquer.
With the cold season coming soon, now is the best time to think about protecting your outdoor wooden objects and buildings. And coloured varnish for exterior wood from Kreidezeit is a good choice, especially if you're a fan of natural products.
