When can we say a paint is natural?
We are tempted to think that water-based products are environmentally friendly. But waterborne does not necessarily mean eco-friendly. Water-based products are valued because they do not emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and because there is no danger of fire due to their flammability. This does not mean they may not contain less healthy compounds. A product is considered to be natural if the raw materials from which it is made are found in nature, not obtained by a chemical process. If the material undergoes processes such as bleaching or whitening, these are also done using natural products and must not result in substances that endanger human health.
Properties of oil-based paint
Kreidezeit oil-based paint is a natural product very suitable for exterior and interior wood finishing. It is recommended for finishes in children's rooms or for allergy sufferers. Let's have a look at other properties of oil paint:
- Contains no synthetic materials,
- It is highly weather-resistant,
- It contains pigments which make it resistant to UV radiation,
- It is elastic, it does not crack if the wood has dimensional variations caused by moisture variations,
- Easy to maintain and fix,
- The oil has the ability to penetrate deep into the wood,
- The top coat has a nice, satiny sheen,
- Very good moisture resistance.
How to use
For a very good protection of wood it is recommended to apply a 3-layer system:
- the first layer is grinded oil. It penetrates deep into the wood and protects against moisture
- the second layer is oil-based semi-oily hard-wearing paint. The paint has a high covering power and gives the wood a silky sheen
- the last layer is that of oil-based grease-resistant paint. It is the top coat and is recommended for exterior applications. The high oil content gives it very good weather resistance. The final appearance is glossy, oily.
Windows, doors, shutters or wood paneling can be painted. The paint can also be used to treat steel and zinc surfaces.
Before application, oil-based paints should be thoroughly shaken. If the paint is held for a long period, a hardened puddle will form on the surface due to the reaction of the oil with oxygen in the air. This should not be mixed with the rest of the paint but removed. The paint shall be applied in a thin, even coat with a brush or short-haired trowel. Do not apply the next coat until the first is completely dry.
In interior areas there is no need for the final coat of oily paint. You can apply two coats of semi-oily paint with a matt-matte finish.
Advantages of using oil-based paint
The paint is ready colored and can be applied directly to untreated wood. It can be used for exterior wood finishing due to its content of UV-resistant mineral pigments.
It can be used for all types of exterior woodwork - exterior windows and doors, facades - as well as for finishing toys.
Painting with oil paint results in an elastic film that does not crack or peel. Even if it degrades over time - the oil in the top layer is washed away by the weather - the oil underneath still protects the wood. Recoating is simple, without cleaning off the old layers. Another coat of paint or oil (colorless stain) is applied.
