With Radu Călian about design and functionality, on September 22 at B2Bife, Revista din Lemn stand

Radu Călian - Tilion Studio - will be present at the Revista din Lemn stand at BIFE-SIM 2023 on Friday, starting at 2.00 pm, during the B2Bife event. We will talk about "Design, form, functionality, aesthetics in wooden furniture", but also about wood-blowing instruments and sculpture, Radu's passions. Although his diploma diploma says he is an industrial design engineer/designer, Radu feels he is a visual artist. He will also tell us about his plans for the future, the new studio, moving to the countryside and many other topics.

Designer, engineer, carpenter, artist

Radu has been attracted to design since high school, when he dreamed of studying automotive design. After high school, he applied for admission to the University of Arts and Design in Cluj Napoca and to the Technical University of Industrial Design. He was admitted to both, but the latter was on budget, no fees, so he chose this path.

"In retrospect, I can say that it was a lucky fluke and I'm glad it happened that way. The advantage a technical university has is that it develops your thinking in a different direction to an arts university, it teaches you how products work and especially how they can be made. Of course, it also has the disadvantage that the creative side and the subjects that involve creation are on the back burner. You are more of an engineer than a designer, but creativity can also be cultivated individually."

He started working with wood as a hobby in the fall of 2014. She improvised a rudimentary little workbench on her balcony with a few hand tools. During college he had made a few objects out of various materials, but wood attracted him the most. He made a wooden spoon, a picture frame, a mirror frame and other small things. What he didn't keep he gave as gifts, and the feedback has been positive and encouraging. What's more, the new hobby gave her a chance to express her creativity.

The wooden objects are his own creation from start to finish. Concept, realization, electrical part, everything up to the installation in the recipient's home are designed and realized by Radu. And they are unique. The concept is born together with the finished product, the conception, design and execution are interwoven. Without a manufacturing model and standardized manufacturing process the realization of the project is slower, but full of creativity.
