Nest in the tree - experiencing bird life

American artist Jayson Fann designs and builds nests for people. He lives in California's Big Sur Valley and collaborates with the International Center for Art and Culture Big Sur Spirit Gardenwhere those who want to experience bird life can buy them. But they can try out tree-nesting first in the only nest where you can stay at Treebones Resort.

Another way to experience life close to nature

The nests are not particularly comfortable, precisely so that the person who wants to live as close as possible to nature. They have no running water or other such facilities. But they do have mattresses and pillows. The problem is that on rainy days, the nest doesn't offer the necessary protection. However, there are also quite large nests where a tent can be set up inside. For those who want the most authentic experience in nature, a tree nest is the perfect place.

The nests are made from twigs that Fann collects from local forests. He prefers eucalyptus branches because they are more flexible. The Treebones' public nest is generously sized to accommodate eight people. But it's not the standard size. Fann can make small nests for 2 people, but also very large nests where there is enough space for 30 people.

Jayson says he started nesting when he was 12-13 years old. He has a great respect for trees and chooses his branches in such a way that they don't harm him. The best branches come from the top of the trees. They are mature, strong and have curved, spiral shapes, an advantage when building nests.

After being cleaned of leaves, the branches are sorted by size. They are then assembled like game pieces to make a flowing spiral. When it reaches a certain size, the nest is transported to the future site where it is placed on a strong base already built. Sometimes, when the nest is large, a crane is needed to make the placement. Once in place, the ladder is built and the mattress and cushions are placed.

The nests are a way of living in communion with nature and the environment. Proceeds from the sale of the nests go to the Big Sur Spirit Garden Center to sponsor artwork and environmental projects.
