Manufacture of wooden kitchen shredders in Canada

Located on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Larch Wood Canada manufactures handcrafted kitchen choppers from larch wood. In addition to gorgeous color and design patterns, Larch Wood specializes in shredders as kitchen tools made from larch planks because they are durable and feature a food shredding surface with a so-called "self-healing" characteristic.

Don Beamish, general manager of Larch Wood Canada, which designed these kitchen shredders and launched them on the market in 2005, tells us in a video interview, which you can see at the end of the article, about the steps involved in making his famous kitchen shredders.

In the first phase, the larch logs are cut on the Wood-Mizer LT40 saw. Then the lumber is carefully stacked and placed in a kiln. The dried wood arrives at the horizontal saw where it is cut to various lengths. From the horizontal saw it goes to the planer, where it is finished on all four sides. The next step is the circular saw, which cuts the wood to the desired dimensions for the final product. But these may not be quite so precise, so the product goes through the profiling machine in the final stage, which makes the dimensions very accurate.

Then the products go into the press for the first gluing. "The workers who do this trace the ends of each piece of wood to determine the pattern that will be on the surface of the final chipper. They create beautiful layouts by mixing different shades and patterns," Don Beamish tells us.

Once the gluing is complete, the pieces of wood are sent to the planing machine which removes excess glue and makes the surface perfectly clean. From there, the product goes to the circular saw for cross-cutting into two-inch pieces. These pieces go through a secondary cut to get the final surface of the kitchen shredders. They will go through thickness sanders, finish sanders and edge rounders. In the final step, the product is coated with three coats (two coats of mineral oil and one coat of wax) and then packed for shipment to customers.

"When you purchase a shredder from us, you expect to receive a product that you will enjoy using, that will become a focal point in your kitchen, and even be able to pass on to your children, i.e. be durable," explains Don Beamish, General Manager of Larch Wood Canada.
