At the heart of the biggest exhibition dedicated to wooden construction, Dach+Holz 2024, we had the opportunity to talk to Wolfgang Schafitel, responsible for international affairs at Bildungszentrum Holzbau in Biberach, an institution recognized throughout Europe for excellence in training wood professionals.
The Bildungszentrum Holzbau has the capacity to train up to 1,300 apprentices a year and is one of the largest wood construction apprenticeship centers in Germany, possibly the largest in Europe. Wolfgang Schafitel proudly describes the structure of the apprenticeship program: "Apprentices spend the first year in vocational school, where they focus on learning the basics and specific technologies. The next two years are structured in a dual model, combining theoretical education with practical work in companies."
The institution has state-of-the-art facilities, including two CNC cutting machines and various other modern equipment, which prepare apprentices not only to become competent carpenters, but also to pursue additional specializations after graduation. Wolfgang Schafitel emphasizes that after the three years of study, graduates can choose to become master carpenters or pursue additional courses in areas such as CAD and BIM design.
The center goes beyond local education. "We actively participate in the Erasmus Plus program and have previously collaborated in Leonardo projects, allowing cultural and professional exchange with schools in Hungary, the UK, Denmark and France"explains Schafitel. This international openness allows students from outside Germany to experience diverse construction practices, contributing to a deeper understanding of the field.
The interview with Wolfgang Schafitel gives an insight into how Bildungszentrum Holzbau is taking an important role in training new professionals in the German timber construction industry, emphasizing the commitment to innovation and quality. In the context of growing interest in sustainable and environmentally friendly construction, this educational center responds to current and future market needs.
Wolfgang Schafitel emphasizes the importance of providing high quality education that combines traditional craftsmanship with the latest technologies and practices in the wood construction industry. Through this approach, applied education becomes fundamental in the training of competent professionals prepared to cope with an ever-changing industry. The interview also provides essential information about the career path needed to become a carpenter or master carpenter.
