Attic - styles and design ideas

I've always loved the attic for that bohemian air of youth, of being a student, of good times and carefree. The attic is a space that those who have houses can "steal" from the attic and furnish according to their desires and needs. This can create guest rooms under the eaves, a small studio for the young student, a living room for meetings with friends or children's rooms and playground.

Materials used in the attic

All sorts of materials can be used for the furnishing, but you have to admit that for the loft, wood seems the most suitable. With walls clad entirely or only half-timbered, with or without false beams and support posts, with reading and seating areas built of wood under Velux windows, lofts will exude warmth and privacy.

The style in which an attic can be designed depends on the destination and taste, but in my opinion, the most popular styles are rustic, classic and modern.

Rustic style

A rustic design almost always involves beams and support posts. Walls can be clad with wood or painted plasterboard, or simply varnished or painted masonry. In the loft, floorboards look better than parquet. Long pieces of solid wood enhance the rustic style.

The finish goes a long way to making the style stand out. If the beams are finished with an antique finish or reclaimed wood is used, with signs of 'ageing' - nail holes, scratches, differentiating late wood from early wood - the rustic effect is guaranteed.

You can finish everything in shades of white, the walls, beams and floorboards, as if everything were painted with a bidet in turn, or each can have its own colour, thus making each other stand out.

If possible, you can combine a brick wall, which is left unfinished or is rendered directly over the brick without further treatment, with plywood walls and classic wooden floorboards. In my opinion the effect is wonderful.

Classic style furnishing

For a classic style, the wood used should not show its age, everything should be finished as simply and as sparingly as possible. Monochrome can be used again, but less garish, pastel, warm colour combinations are also suitable.

It is best not to use dark colours if the attic is not very bright. And if it was built in an old house, using part of the attic, it's definitely not very bright, and dark colours don't help. But there are ways to make the attic a very bright space, as well as one for contemplation and dreaming.

Modern attic

For the modern attic, you can adopt minimalist style, simple wood and sophisticated colours.

It can be wallpapered or the walls can be painted, especially if it's a children's room. There can still be beams or pillars that can be integrated into the decor with colour and that, by contrast, highlight the modern furnishings.

The attic, for me, is where I can relax, where I can write and where I can see the drops fall when it rains. It's a nice, warm and cosy place, and this is also due to the contrast between the walnut-coloured finish of the pillars and floorboards and the white of the walls. It's up to you to make it just as pleasant in your own attic.
