Attic - styles and design ideas

I've always loved the attic for that bohemian air of youth, of being a student, of beautiful and carefree times. The attic is a space that those who have houses can "steal" from the attic and furnish it according to their desires and needs. Under the eaves, there can be guest rooms, a small studio for the young student, a living room for meetings with friends or children's rooms and playground.

Materials used in the attic

All kinds of materials can be used for the interior design, but you have to admit that for the loft, wood seems the most suitable. With all or half-timbered walls, with or without false beams and supporting pillars, with wooden reading and seating areas under Velux windows, attics will radiate warmth and privacy.

The style in which an attic room can be decorated depends on the destination and the taste of each person, but in my opinion, the most popular styles are rustic, classic and modern.

Rustic style

A rustic layout almost always involves the presence of beams and supporting posts. Walls can be clad with wood or painted plasterboard or simply varnished or painted masonry. In the attic, floorboards look better than parquet. Long pieces of solid wood enhance the rustic style.

The finish goes a long way in emphasizing the style. If the beams are finished antiqued or reclaimed wood is used, with signs of "ageing" - nail holes, scratches, the difference between late and early wood - the rustic effect is guaranteed.

You can finish everything in shades of white - the walls, beams and floorboards, as if they were all whitewashed one at a time, or each can have its own color, making each one stand out from the other.

If possible, you can combine a brick wall, which is left unfinished or is painted directly over the brick without further treatment, with plywood walls and the classic wooden floor. In my opinion the effect is wonderful.

Classic-style interior design

For a classic style, the wood used should not show its age, everything should be finished as simply and simply as possible. Monochrome can be used again, but combinations of colors that are as subtle as possible, pastel, warm, are also suitable.

It is better not to use dark colors if the attic is not very bright. And if it was built in an old house, using part of the attic, it's certainly not very bright, and dark colors don't help. But there are ways to make the attic a very bright space, as well as a space for contemplation and dreaming.

Modern attic

For the modern attic you can go minimalist with simple wood and sophisticated colors.

The walls can be wallpapered or painted, especially if it's a children's room. There may still be beams or pillars that can be integrated into the decor through color and, by contrast, highlight the modern fittings.

The attic, for me, is the place where I can relax, where I can write and where I can see the raindrops fall when it rains. It's a nice, warm and cozy place, and this is also due to the contrast between the walnut-colored finish of the pillars and floorboards and the white of the walls. It's up to you to make it just as pleasant in your own attic.
