Korean artist Cha Jong Rye was born in 1968 in Daejoen, Korea and studied at Ewha Women's University in Seoul, majoring in sculpture. The birthplace, which in translation means Cwide field, always reminded him of his simple roots. The simplicity of nature, the essence of things in nature and wood are the basis of her work. In her hands wood acquires fluidity, gives the sensation of movement, of passing, of living.
Shapes that break the flat surface reaching towards the sky
Cha Jong Rye expresses her inner thoughts through wood, and the wood she works with takes on the most interesting and strange shapes. Her works are made from hundreds of pieces of wood, which she sanded by hand and arranged in such a way that they take on shapes that bring to mind genesis, selenarian soils, beginnings and endings.
Cha Jong Rye works with wood as if it were clay or paint. He meticulously layers hundreds of carefully sanded pieces of wood into shapes that seemingly have no beginning or end. This gives rise to shifting dunes, wrinkled linen or coned selen landscapes. About the cones in his sculptures, he says it is the first shape to break a flat surface and the last shape to reach the sky.
Her work shows craftsmanship, attention to detail and precision. She succeeds in transforming the rough and heavy look of wood into soft, warm and tactile sculptures. The asymmetrical surfaces create plays of light and shadow that heighten the sense of movement, energy, flow and life.
Cha Jong Rye's works are part of many private collections or are in museums. He has exhibited in countless solo and group exhibitions around the world. She currently lives and works in Korea.
