Wood is such a fascinating, warm and beautiful material that few can stay away from it. Although some fields never seem to intersect with wood, there are still people who make the connection. That's how inspired, enjoyable and useful wooden gadgets emerge. The ones that have caught my eye now are gadget-utilities in the IT field. In theory, IT seems the furthest removed from the world of wood. And yet, the meeting of the two fields has given rise to some of the most inspiring gadgets. Here are a few of them.
Michael Roopenian's wooden keyboard
First place in my preferences is wooden keyboard created by Michael Roopenian for Apple. It's not new - it was manufactured in 2011 - but so far nothing has managed to dethrone it.
From the very beginning, the keyboard was redesigned to take into account the user's wishes. The solution found to meet all requirements was sandblasted wood. The keyboard was imagined as a sanded woodso that each key has a different drawing and they all create the whole.
USBs otherwise
Another gadget that I find wonderful in its simplicity is USB stick clothes pegs. It is made by Polish designer Bartosz Mucha, which has a whole range of items made with and from wooden clothespins, including clothing.
Also from the USB flash drive category we have the collection of 1 GB animated flash drives created by the Japanese company Marubeni Info Tech. You can choose from 5 animal designs - dog, pig, elephant, hippo and swan - made from maple or walnut wood.
The Dutch from Ooomsthey even made USBs out of branches picked from the forest. They were hand-selected and processed into 4, 8 or 16 GB USB sticks.
Wooden covers for tablet, laptop and notebook
Wooden covers of bamboos created by firm Blackbox Case for Apple tablets, laptops and notebooks are distinctive and stylish in equal measure.
They can be ordered in various colours and if you want one of these gadgets, you can order one yourself. It will be delivered to your home.
Laptop holder
At the end, a bamboo stand that also allows for laptop cooling. The stand is angled and holds the laptop at a distance from the desk, allowing air to circulate underneath. This saves cooling energy and allows the laptop to be used for a longer period before needing to be reconnected to the power supply. The stand is built in 2 versions, fixed and adjustable.
Gadgets are objects that beautify and even brighten our lives. And when wood comes into the mix, it takes things to another level.
