Wooden chopsticks for coffee and art

They are such amazing art forms that it's impossible not to wonder how the idea came about. One such art is that made by Jonathan Brilliant, of Raleigh, North Carolina. He makes huge sculptures out of wooden coffee sticks that he assembles without glue. How does he do it? He simply assembles them like fabric.

The candlestick chandelier

Probably most of us don't even think about the chopstick we stirred the coffee with. Once it has done its job it is discarded without our attention for a moment. With wooden chopsticks like these, Brilliant has created true space art installations. The number of chopsticks used for each work is in the tens of thousands.

Perhaps his most spectacular work is the one he did in 2007 in Sumter, South Carolina. It is made on two levels around a chandelier, making it look like a huge lampshade. Brilliant produced a sculptural piece that starts upstairs, descends over the balcony and remains suspended around the chandelier. When the light is switched on the effect the 60,000+ wooden sticks woven together make is impressive.

The whole work took only 14 days to complete. Everything was done by hand-weaving wooden sticks without using glue or tools. The whole structure was based solely on the tensile strength of the sticks used.

The work remained mounted in the space for 6 months after which it was dismantled and the materials were donated to a local school.

But it's clear that the artist didn't stop at just 60,000 sticks. One of the works completed in 2016 and entitled The Stir City Piece put together more than 70,000 chopsticks, 4,500 coffee cups placed inside each other, aluminium cables, espresso and water. The work is on display at The Taubman Museum of Art.
