Industrial style barn door

Everybody knows the famous barn doors with a sliding system, "barn door" if we take their origin. The deadline was approaching, I was due to move and I had no doors in my flat. I didn't have time to build them all, but I saved space for one, the one for the closet, the others were ordered. As the access was through a rather narrow hallway, a classic hinged door was not feasible, so I had the opportunity to build my famous barn door with the sliding system.

Since there was no need for a hinge, the dimensions of the door had to exceed the gap on both sides and height by a few centimetres.

The door itself is a sandwich composed of three layers, two outer layers made of spruce wood and an inner one from a OSB plywood 8mm.

With the final measurements of the door known we cut the OSB plywood to size 2100 x 700 mm. Next came the sizing of the plank, requiring 24 pieces 175 x 700 x 16 mm.

With all the components ready, the assembly part followed. The boards were glued to the OSB plywood, followed by the finishing part. After a grinding Two coats of bath and one coat of wax followed for protection.

The wood part ends here, followed by the other component of the spectrum, iron. From this point onwards, the work continued with fixing the platen to the wooden door structure and designing the sliding system.

    • The door handle and wheels are part of the menu of such a door.
      That looks great!
      Good riddance!

  • I don't think I understand exactly how you installed the unidirectional roller on the wall that prevents the door from swinging. Can one or two photos be taken?

  • Hello.
The door looks fantastic. I'd like to do something like this for a built-in cabinet under a beam. Basically I want to have 3 doors hanging from the beam, that "walk" in front of 4 closets - 3 for clothes + 1 open to be a bookcase. Please if you can give me details of how I could replace the unidirectional roller, as I have nowhere to put it, my wall is actually the cupboards and I don't want to put the floor down either.
    Thank you.

  • Hello. F frum! We also want a bathroom door like this. Can you give me more details by email, please? What is the fastening system for the one-dimensional castor? We would like to make it ourselves because the price of the ones already made is a bit high. Thank you.
