Not everything sold as wax is natural wax

Furniture Wax in DIY stores are generally mixtures of natural and artificial waxes dissolved in solvent. In the past, beeswax was used. Now, wax as such is rarely used. Artificial waxes are mixtures of paraffins resulting from the petroleum distillation process. They are either in solid form - more difficult to apply, sometimes requiring special application methods - or in paste form, in which case application is much easier.

These materials can be used to finish wood and furniture, but cannot be considered natural products. If the requirement is to finish children's furniture or toys they are not recommended for use and some are not even accepted by European standards.

What is Saflor wax or safflower wax

Kreidezeit's Saflor (safflower) wax is made from beeswax bleached with chlorine-free substances. However, the wax is not chemically treated and bleaching is done with natural products as in the past. At the end the basicity is neutralised to obtain a non-aggressive product.

It is a natural wood wax of outstanding quality that is simple and easy to apply. During application, drying or use of the finished objects no disturbing odours are emitted. The wax is transparent and preserves the colour, texture and natural beauty of the wood.

One of the most important properties of Saflor wax is that it does not yellow over time. The natural waxes used are usually mixtures of beeswax and linseed oil. It is the oil that turns yellow over time. Saflor wax is produced without linseed oil, containing instead safflower oil, which is more stable over time.

The main properties of Saflor wax are:

  • product 100% natural
  • does not yellow
  • has an antistatic effect
  • has no smell
  • easy to apply
  • no emissions hazardous to health
  • transparency
  • preserves the texture of the wood and brings out its natural beauty
  • natural and silky finish.

Application

Wax can be applied to all wood surfaces that are used indoors. It can be applied directly to untreated wood or to surfaces to which natural oils have been applied. It can also be used to protect lacquered furniture. It is particularly recommended for furniture, toys and panelling.

Saflor wax is applied undiluted with a special wax brush (round brush with stiffer bristles), a trowel or a cloth. It is very important that the wax is applied with repeated, circular movements initially and finally along the grain, in order to penetrate the wood very well.

After application, leave 30 minutes, even an hour, for the wood to absorb the wax as well as possible, after which the excess is wiped off before drying begins. Wiping is done with a dry cotton cloth.

Used cloths soaked in oil or wax and other tools used should be washed with soap and water and air dried after use. If they are not washed, they should be placed in a closed container or in containers over which water is poured because they present a danger of self-ignition due to their ethereal oil content. The phenomenon is called self-combustion, which is specific to all waxes and oils.

If you have something to wax in the near future, don't miss the opportunity. Good luck and good luck!
