The Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests has launched the "Forest Inspector". What is "Forest Inspector"? "A tool to combat illegal logging" says the Ministry in a press release.
The Forest Inspector is an app that only works on android devices. It can be downloaded for free from Google Play, i.e. from here. For one month, the app will be in test version. Basically, anyone can use their android phone to check whether a lorry or another lorry transporting timber is doing it properly or not. In other words, this app makes it extremely easy for the public to check the legality of a timber transport in a single step.
How does the app work? You enter your registration number...
We are waiting....
The application displays the information in the system for that shipment.
We learn more from Cristiana Pasca Palmer, Minister for the Environment, Water and Forests. "Suppose we are on the Bucharest - Pitesti motorway and we see a vehicle carrying woody mass. We have one thing to do: Enter the truck's registration number into the app we already have downloaded on our mobile phone with the data service running. The app checks, in real time, this number in the "SUMAL" system (N.R. the system for tracking/monitoring timber from felling to final producer) and automatically provides information about the shipment: If the shipment is registered, the app will display the available information about this shipment. This means that the vehicle is legally transporting timber, registered in "SUMAL" and has the necessary documents. If the registration number is not identified, the application will generate the following message: No Online Code generated in the last 72 hours for the verified car number! This means that this transport may be illegal, as it is not registered in the "SUMAL" system. In this situation, the next step is to call 112 to report the transport and for a quick intervention of the control institutions. Basically, through the "Forest Inspector", any citizen automatically queries our "SUMAL" database", said Cristiana Pasca Palmer at a press conference.
